Inspired by our founder Ali Jarvis’ “lemon” dog, Luc, this series is dedicated to local, special-needs pups looking for loving homes. This week’s adoptable pooch is sponsored by The Urban Dog and Pet Connections.
Name: Rockford, AKA Rocky
Stats: 3-year-old, 65-lb pit bull
Time in foster: 2 months
Location: Twin Cities
Rescue: Twin Cities Pet Rescue
SWD: We are utter suckers when it comes to wrinkles like Rockford’s. Tell us everything!
TCPR: Rockford is a total sweetheart. As big and tough looking as he is, he is a total lovebug. He is in a foster home with many young children and does great with them. He follows them around and loves playing and snuggling with them all day. And he’s so patient too! He doesn’t mind at all when they dress him up or cover him in blankets. When he’s not hanging with his tiny human BFFs, Rockford loves chasing toys and running like a wildman in the back yard.
SWD: What a charming guy! So what’s his special need?
TCPR: Early in Rockford’s life, someone tried to play with him using a laser pointer, and it brought out extreme, persistent compulsive behaviors in him. Even though he hasn’t seen the laser pointer in years, he still searches for it everywhere. He will run room to room looking for “something” in a very anxious state. He will need a dedicated adopter to help him build up to extended periods of relaxation.
SWD: It sounds like getting to train with him will be a rewarding venture. What other fun stuff can you share about Rockford?
TCPR: He makes us laugh every day. With his goofy smile and his ever-furrowed brow, he’s got the most comical facial expressions! When Rockford sleeps, he makes lots of adorable noises. He grunts, snorts, and snores like a little pig and makes everyone around him crack up with laughter.
SWD: Life with Rockford would be so much fun! What would make the perfect home for him?
TCPR: Rockford will need a home with patience and understanding of his needs, with someone willing to work with him decreasing his anxiety so he can truly shine! Rockford is great with all of the kids (large and small) in his foster home, but given the time he needs and his energy level, he would likely be most successful in a home with older children. He’d also enjoy being the only dog in his home. His people are his favorite thing in the world, and he loves snuggling and playing with them. He needs a dedicated home, but he will pay his family back a hundred times over in love and affection.
This pupper’s story is brought to you by The Urban Dog, which offers super-customizable dog-walking and pet-sitting services, packed with affection and safety; and by Pet Connections, a weekly radio show devoted to the joys of being a pet owner.
