Where To Go Skijoring Near Denver

A weekend hitting the slopes usually means finding a sitter for doggo and getting sad puppy lewks that say “How dare you go without me?!” We have a better idea: Team up with your four-legged friend for a snow adventure by skijoring, which is basically cross country skiing with your dog pulling you. We sniffed out 5 dog-friendly Nordic skiing trails where you can go skijoring near Denver. 

P.S. Skijoring is best for strong, larger woofs who are in good shape. Smaller breeds can come with on groomed paths as long as they are well-behaved. Call in advance, as most of the trails are reservation only at this time.

1. Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa

This award-winning, picturesque cross country skiing resort is nestled 75 miles west of Denver, at the base of the Continental Divide near Winter Park. Devil’s Thumb offers 5 miles of dog-friendly trails open to the public. Call ‘em to make reservations for skijoring lessons or rentals. Lodging at the resort is dog-friendly, so it would be the perfect romantic getaway.

2. Gold Run Nordic Center

Sled dogs with boundless energy and strength should check out the intermediate Peabody Placer (2.1 miles) and Preston Loops (2.4 miles) at the Gold Run Nordic Center in Breckenridge. Want an extra adventure with a great view of the Rockies? Take a ride on the Breckendridge “BreckConnect” Gondola. Rides are free for people and dogs; just be sure to keep pup on a leash.

3. Breckenridge Nordic Center

If you’re a beginner, but still wanna bask in the glory that is Breckenridge, explore the Breckenridge Nordic Center. This pupular scenic trail features the Nordic World Trail (0.8 miles) with epic views of the Rockies. They also offer two dog-friendly snowshoe trails: Little Red’s Run and Robin’s Nest.

4. Aspen/Snowmass Nordic Trail System

Snow bunnies and their pups know that Aspen is a spectacular must-see. Featuring one of the largest groomed cross country ski systems in North America, the Aspen/Snowmass Nordic Trail System offers six dog-friendly trails rated from beginner to advanced. With sweeping scenery and trails named Bernese Boulevard and Labrador Lane, what’s not to love?

5. Crested Butte Nordic

While Crested Butte is quite a jaunt from Denver, the 231-mile drive is stunning and well worth it. With five dog-friendly trails, this winter wonderland is known as the Nordic Ski Capital of Colorado. Be sure to purchase a trail pass for your dog. There are plenty of dog-friendly lodging options in Crested Butte and the surrounding mountains if pup wants to make a weekend out of it.
