Podium Pet Products – Guest Blog Post
As the sun (hopefully) continues to shine, we can look forward to outdoor adventures, long walks and fun activities with our furry friends.
However, the heat also poses risks, especially where our dog’s sensitive paws are concerned! At Podium Pet Products, we understand the importance of keeping pets safe and comfortable throughout the changes that each season brings, so here’s a comprehensive guide on how to protect your dog’s paws during hot weather.
Understanding the risks
When the sun is out, surfaces like concrete, sand and asphalt can become extremely hot because they absorb and retain heat. Often, this heat can burn a dog’s paws within minutes, so it’s important to be aware of these rising temperatures and how they can harm your dog. Without shoes to protect their paws during hot weather, we need to make sure we are extremely careful to protect them ourselves!
Tips to protect your dog’s paws
- Test the ground temperature
You should always test the ground temperature before taking your dog for a walk. We recommend holding your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If you can do so comfortably, then it’s likely an okay temperature to take your dog for their walk. But please remember, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog!
- Choose the right time for walks
Schedule your walks during the cooler times of the day, ideally early in the morning or late in the evening, to avoid peak heat. This has the added benefit of preventing your dog from overheating or getting heatstroke, as well as protecting their paws. (Remember, there are lots of well-being aspects to consider during hot weather in addition to good paw protection – did you know that dogs can get sunburn too?).
- Walk on grass or shaded paths
Some surfaces absorb the heat more than others. Wherever possible, choose shaded paths or grassy areas for your walks. Grass stays cooler than pavement and it also provides a gentler surface for your dog’s paws. Try spending your daily walk in the park or the woods.
- Use paw protection products
Consider using paw protection products, such as dog boots or paw balm. Dog boots create a barrier between your dog’s paws and hot surfaces. Whilst paw balm can also provide a layer of protection and keep your dog’s paw pads moisturised and protected from heat and rough terrain. Dry and cracked paws are more susceptible to injury so it’s important to keep them moisturised where possible. At Podium Pet Products, our Be:Loved range includes high-quality paw & nose balms which are designed to provide maximum protection and comfort throughout the seasons.
- Check and clean paws after walks
Early detection of any issues can help to prevent more serious problems occurring down the line. We recommend that you check your dog’s paws after each walk for any signs of damage, including redness, blisters or cuts.

By taking proactive steps to protect your dog’s paws during hot weather, you can enjoy the summer together safely and comfortably. A little extra care goes a long way to keeping your furry friends happy and healthy and maintaining your special bond.
