Coffee AND dogs? We are so here for this.
We know you love getting out and about with your dog, but when pupper can’t come with you, the second best thing is to support businesses that help animals. Enter The Beancounter Coffeehouse & Café, a downtown Minneapolis café that partners with its roaster, Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co., to donate 20 percent of its coffee and espresso proceeds to no-kill rescues across the Midwest, including Secondhand Hounds here in Minnesota.
Inside, wooden block letters spelling “DOGS & COFFEE” run along the counter, photos of dogs adorn the walls, and a friendly face greets you and takes your order: Can he interest you in a Cinnamon Roll Latte, Steamed Maple Cold Brew, or Caramel Apple Cider? Perhaps a scratch-made pastry? (Note: The blueberry muffins are the cat’s pajamas). There’s a good chance that greeter is Zach Danekas, the general manager. Oh, and one of those pups on the wall is Sota, his Miniature Pinscher.
“We are a huge coffee family, but I think we’re an even bigger dog-loving family,” Danekas says. “When we created The Beancounter, we wanted to blend our two biggest passions together: coffee and dogs!” (Ummm, samesies.)
You can take your pick of restaurant chains downtown, but this business is a family one founded by Zach’s mom, Suann Wells. She started things pup in 2016 with a café in Burlington, IA. The Beancounter expanded to downtown Minneapolis this past April in an effort to include as many family members as paw-sible in the biz. The downtown Minneapolis café’s decidedly doggo decor features all of their pups, past and present.
In their free time, the fam loves exploring the Twin Cities’ dog-friendly restaurant patios, breweries, and dog parks with its pack; a few favorites are the Minnehaha off-leash park and The Howe Daily Kitchen & Bar, which offers a dog menu on its patio.
No doggo-inspired coffee drinks on The Beancounter’s menu yet, but Danekas says they’re already looking into it. We’ll keep ya pup-dated!
