Prepare to be pup-lifted: Today we’re bringing you a heartwarming adoption story involving one of Duluth’s own and her four-legged, one-eyed friend.

While stationed in Puerto Rico to assist with hurricane relief efforts, Airman First Class Krishia Baltzar met the [dog] love of her life. There are a lot of stray dogs in the area where she’s stationed, but one, in particular, stood out.

“One-Eyed Juan,” a friendly young stray, took an immediate liking to Krishia, and the feeling was mutual. Krishia was quickly charmed by Juan’s gentle, loving, and cuddly nature. They became fast friends–Juan would sleep outside her door, walk her to work early in morning, and accompany her home every night. Could you ask for a better friend?

“I fell in love with him,” says Krishia. “I can’t leave him. My house actually said I couldn’t have pets…I either had to move out and keep Juan, or get rid of Juan and keep my home. Guess what I picked?”

“I can always find a new home, but I don’t know if I can find a new dog,” she adds. (Editor’s note: I’m not crying; you’re crying!)

As for Juan’s nickname, he was playing with some of the local horses when he was kicked in the face. The injury resulted in him losing most, if not all, of the vision in one eye, so he definitely needs a little extra TLC.

Luckily, Krishia is in it for the long haul. She has already taken care of getting Juan his shots and has officially adopted him. She and Juan will be returning home to Minnesota later this month — just in time to ring in the new year together.

“Everybody back home is super excited to meet him,” says Krishia.
