And when we say people watching, we really mean dog admiring. So grab pup’s Birkenstocks and best flannel, then head to the hood with the chillest vibe on the block (err, city) to check out these dog-friendly Capitol Hill gems.
Sniff Out a New Book
If there’s one thing we like even more than curling up on the couch with a good read and a good pup, it’s bringing that pup with to help pick out the next page-turner! Capitol Hill’s Elliott Bay Book Company, open since 1973, is paws down the city’s most well-known bookshop. They carry 150,000+ titles (new and used), and have an unparalleled schedule of author readings and events.
Raise Your Spirits
Northwest Liquor boasts the largest liquor and cold beer selection on Capitol Hill alone, and they specialize in stocking spirits from Pacific Northwest distilleries and allowing very good dogs to help their humans pick the finest wines. For the Beer Guys, Northwest Liquor has eight taps ready to go at any time (and Sundays are $2 off growler fills). Find everything you need to make a dog-themed cocktail when you get home.
Stroll Through A Farmer’s Market
If fresh produce is the name of your game, Capitol Hill Farmers Market is the VIP. With fewer artsy-craftsy stalls and more vendors selling local fruits, veggies, breads, soups, and flowers, this market will bring the yum to your Sunday. Open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. all year long.
Clean Your Filthy Princess
My dog will jump into the Puget Sound in the middle of December after a ball, but if I try to bathe her with warm water in a tub with treats and friendly faces all around? Game over. She’s terrified.
Rex Seattle gets it (even if I don’t), and their large tubs, professional shampoo system, towels, dryers, aprons, and brushes are all there to make your life easier and your pup’s less stressful. Rex’s operates first-come, first-serve, so be ready to wait if you get there at peak times.
Treat Yourself
Because why not? Oh Hello Again is still a puppy in the Capitol Hill shop scene, but has made a splash! Part bookstore, part boutique, you can pick up gifts for anyone at owner Kari Ferguson’s quirky storefront…but it’s especially dynamo for the kids in your life. The 20 virtual baby showers on your calendar? Yup, they have gifts for those.
End With a Nightcap
Oo-la-la! OOLA Distillery is named after the owner’s believed German Shepherd, Oola. There during the infant years of her distillery, she’s since “gone on to guard the great distillery in the sky,” but her spirit (and her K9 executives Phelan and Oliver) remain to regularly prowl the premises of the Capitol Hill distillery.
