Inspired by our founder Ali Jarvis’ “lemon” dog, Luc, this series is dedicated to local, special-needs pups looking for loving homes. This week’s adoptable pooch is scooped up and served to you by Dog Days in St Paul and Metro Dogs in the North Loop. See why they’re so grrreat at the end of this story.
Stats: 2.5-year-old, 37-lb Shar-Pei
Location: Twin Cities
Rescue: Underdog Rescue
Sidewalk Dog: Just look at that handsome pup! Tell us about Kyle.
Underdog Rescue: Kyle came to us as feral and, while he still has a long way to go, I love that he tries so hard to be a part of our family. Kyle loves to run in the yard and play “chase” with our Husky. He also likes to chew on raw marrow bones. When Kyle is looking at something and he’s going to turn around, he will first turn that ear and then turn that way (so his right ear moves and then he turns right). We joke that he’s using his turn signals.
SWD: Love it! What’s his special need?
UR: Kyle came into rescue six months ago after spending the first two years of his life in a puppy mill. Even though he knows and trusts my family, he still won’t let us touch him. He is anxious in the house and afraid of things you just don’t think about (like opening the fridge, a tiny spring squeak when you sit on the couch, a sniffle), along with sudden, loud noises. But he is 100% potty trained and will walk to the door to be let out.
SWD: Sounds like Kyle benefits from having another dog around to show him the ropes.
UR: Totally. Kyle needs a doggy role model around who can show him how to be a dog. He’s learned a lot about trusting us and the rules of our house from our Husky, and also really enjoys his company. When they play “chase” in the yard, he gets so excited he bounds around like a bunny!
SWD: Oh fur cute! So what else would make the perfect forever home for Kyle?
UR: Because Kyle is still a flight risk, this sweet boy needs a home with a securely fenced yard and a way to make sure he won’t bolt out an open front door, like a baby gate. His forever home should not include children unless they’re older (the young ones just pay him a bit too much attention for his taste at the moment). Really, everything he needs boils down to a family who understands his extreme fear and can be patient with him while he learns that the sky isn’t falling and nobody is going to hurt him.
