Inspired by our founder Ali Jarvis’ “lemon” dog, Luc, this series is dedicated to local, special-needs pups looking for loving homes. This week’s adoptable pooch is scooped up and served to you by Dog Days in St Paul and Metro Dogs in the North Loop. See why they’re so grrreat at the end of this story.
Stats: 5-year-old, 57-lb Greyhound & Black Lab mix
Location: Twin Cities
Rescue: Pet Haven
SWD: Just look at that darling face! Tell us about Kivi.
PH: Kivi is a sweet, gentle soul who’s full of love for her people. She’s been in foster care for one year, and just adores her foster family. She loves daily walks with time for sniffing, burrowing in cozy blankets, hanging with her humans on the couch, going for rides in the car, and gnawing on soft squeaky toys.
SWD: She sounds like a joy. What’s her special need?
PH: Kivi is a sweet but anxious pup who’s currently on anxiety meds to help her see the world as a kinder place. She has a desire to please, but sometimes worries that she’s not quite sure what her humans want from her. Because of her nervousness, she’s looking for a life of routine, consistency, and quiet to help her be her best self. But most of all, she’s just looking for a home to help her feel safe, respected, and like a beloved member of the pack.
SWD: It seems like Kivi just needs some extra love and affection!
PH: Don’t we all?! You’ll also find that Kivi is an expert at coaxing pats and scratches out of any free human hand. She loves to cuddle up and enjoy some quiet time on the couch, or sneak in a few rounds of fetch with some fun, squeaky toys. If she happens to leave your side, just search for the nearest soft blanket and you’ll find her snug as a bug in a rug, content as can be. If it’s soft and cozy, she’s in heaven. She also loves to chill in her kennel when she needs a break, snack, or nap.
SWD: We know a family that loves to cuddle on the couch and give out pats is out there! So what would a perfect home look like for Kivi?
PH: Kivi can be quite nervous around young children, so if there are children in the house, they should be older. She’d also love to be the only dog in the house, but would do fine with another submissive, respectful dog — just no cats for this girl. She would love a family who has experience with anxious dogs and can respect her timid nature by showing her patience, understanding, and above all — love and cuddles. Plenty of comfy places to curl up is a bonus.

This dog’s story was made possible by some of the pup-lovingest daycares in the Twin Cities: Dog Days in St Paul and Metro Dogs in the North Loop. As one happy customer recently put it, “My dog loves going here. Sometimes I think she loves daycare more than she loves me! The staff are really nice and helpful. The facility is always clean and orderly. My dog is super energetic and at the end of a day there, she’s always exhausted and content. I’ve used other daycares in the past and this is definitely one of the absolute best.” For dog’s sake, give ’em a call today!
