Since moving to Minnesota (she was born and raised in Washington and has worked in Colorado, Idaho, and California), Shayne’s transitioned from TV reporter to radio host and married the love of her life, a Wisconsin native and die-hard Packers fan. A big part of the reason she fell for him was because he also fell for her rescue pup, Payton, an 8-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix. We got the dish on this sweetie from her No. 1 fan.
How you two met: I adopted her as a 2.5-year-old from the Idaho Humane Society. When I took her on her first walk, it was clear she’d never been on one before. Broke my heart. Everything frightened her. She’s come so far since that first year. She’s our sweet baby angel!
Favorite toy: Socks! We’ve bought her all kinds of toys, but she prefers playing fetch and tug of war with socks. This is why my socks rarely match and always have holes in them.
Favorite place to hang out at home: We’ve created a blanket and pillow window seat for her behind the couch. She’ll lie there and sun herself all day long.
Favorite dog park: Gateway Park downtown [Minneapolis]
Favorite dog-friendly restaurant: Keys Café downtown [Minneapolis]
Favorite dog-friendly store: Lulu & Luigi! This is where I found the perfect flower collar for her to wear in my wedding.
Favorite dog-friendly hotel/vaca spot: Boyd’s Mason Lake Resort in the Wisconsin northwoods. We spend a lot of time there. Payton is able to run free and socialize with the uber-friendly deer and all the dogs who call the resort home. It’s her heaven (with the exception of all the tick checks we have to do).
Best trick: It’s not really that impressive, but it’s funny. When you command Payton to lie down, she flops over onto her back and will stay there until you release her.
Best friend: Chuckles, a rescued dachshund who calls Boyd’s Resort home.
Nemesis: Squirrels! She so badly wants to get one, but they’re just too quick for her. If only she could climb trees…
Loves: Yogurt, warm laundry, sunning, and hunting
Hates: Dogs who are faster than her, the big red ball used for kickball games, and rain
Afraid of: Thunder and fireworks
Naughtiest behavior: Garbage diving even though she knows she’ll get in trouble. She’ll walk as low to ground as she can with her tail between her legs until she’s forgiven.
