Twin Cities’ group walks welcome you & your dogs

It is a truth universally acknowledged that walking, like gum and locally brewed craft beer, is best when it comes in packs. And even though the weather’s still far from tropical (or temperate, for that matter), two diverse groups of Twin Cities dog parents are taking that axiom to heart and pounding the pavement in plenty of good company.

GASSY Walks

Greys gettin' along on a GASSY walk.

One of the more established walking groups in the area is run by the Greyhound Pets of America-MN (GPA-MN), and goes by the colorful acronym “GASSY”—that’s Greyhound Ambassadors Strolling Sundays Yarely, for the uninitiated. Come again? GPA-MN president Lisa Quast explains that “yarely” is an Old English word that means quickly or with haste—”appropriately reflective of the greyhound style, of course!”

The original GASSY walk has been taking place around Lake Harriet for a number of years now. A group of greyhound owners meets at the Rose Gardens at 2 pm every Sunday, and for those east of the river, there’s now a GASSY walk in St. Paul at Como Lake Park. That group meets at Black Bear Crossings Cafe, also at 2 pm every Sunday.

Though the GASSY walks were created as an opportunity to socialize greyhounds with each other, they also promote adoption, Lisa says. “Some people have never seen a greyhound before and seeing 10 or 20 hounds together is a ‘wow’ experience. We’ve had people tell us they decide to adopt a hound after seeing our group on the GASSY walks. It’s great publicity to help us find homes for retired hounds.”

A wintertime GASSY walk at Lake Harriet.

And it’s also amusing to see pack dynamics at play. “Some hounds prefer to lead and will try as hard as they can to be at the front of the pack,” Lisa says. “Gracie [Lisa’s 11 year-old greyhound] really enjoys being a leader. Other hounds really appreciate the closeness of being in a pack and will move into small groups and walk side-by-side with each other, just enjoying each other’s company and closeness. Hobbes [her 9-year-old pooch] loves that part.”

Patronizing the Twin Cities’ growing number of dog-friendly restaurants and cafes is another perk of group walking. During the warmer months, the Como Park GASSY walk hangs out at Black Bear Crossings with their pups, and for the past couple of years, the GASSY group has hosted “Dining With Your Dog” events at dog-friendly patios like Psycho Suzi’s and Sea Salt Eatery.

And from what Lisa says, it looks like those greys will keep traveling in a pack for the time being: “It’s a great way to spend time with other dog lovers and enjoy doing what our dogs love most—going for a walk!”

Twin Cities Pack Walk

A newer group walk on the scene is the Twin Cities Pack Walk, started by dog mom extraordinaire Laura Anderson in December 2011. “I was inspired by pack walks that were popping up all over the country,” Laura says, “and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to create a local group that would embrace all breeds, all temperament levels and all handlers.”

Twin Cities Pack Walk is based on a set of ground rules to ensure that everyone has a positive pedestrian experience:

1. Respect Thy Bubble “As an owner of a shy dog,” Laura says, “I was looking for an environment where dogs of varying tolerance levels would be able to train successfully. I determined that it was important that there be no dog-to-dog interaction. By taking the pressure of on-leash greetings out of the equation, we were able to ensure the success of every dog in the pack.”

2. Work It “We also wanted to emphasize that this would be a working walk and that handlers would be expected to engage fully with their dogs for the duration of the walk.”

3. CST “We emphasized ideals of community, support and trail stewardship to promote a positive group dynamic,” she adds.

With these ideals in mind, TC Pack Walk embarked on its maiden voyage less than a month ago, and has since tripled in size to a current walkership of about 20 members. The walks take place weekly on alternating Saturday and Sunday mornings, and generally end with a cup of coffee and dog talk at a nearby dog-friendly coffee shop (last week’s stop was Mel-O-Glaze in South Minneapolis—yum!)

Proper footwear is important, be you of two legs or four. Photo by Paige Reyes.

As if it couldn’t get any cooler, TC Pack Walk is now planning to include volunteers and foster dogs from A Rotta Love Plus and Save-A-Bull Rescue on future walks. “Our group has a strong representation of pit bull-type dogs sprinkled with a huge variety of other breeds,” Laura says. “Last week, Molly, an adopt-a-bull from Minnesota Pit Bull Rescue joined our pack walk. There is a huge diversity of temperament, training and experience among our dogs, which creates a fantastic communal dynamic between the dog handlers every week.”

Laura says the most inspiring thing about walking in a pack is “watching the dogs blossom over the course of the hour, and even more so as the weeks go on. Just last week, we had an A Rotta Love Plus alumni dog, Tank, join us. At the beginning of the walk, he had to keep a distance of about 15 feet to focus and work with his handler. By the end of the walk, he was smack in the middle of the pack and holding his own with the rest of the dogs. It is amazing what a little training and structured socialization can do for a dog!”

And it’s amazing what a little camaraderie and exercise can do for people and pooches from all walks of life.

Bone up on dog manners at Neuman K-9 Academy

Founder Josiah Neuman with an obedient pupil.

Is Muffy a little musty on her manners? Does Fido flip his lid when you’ve got company? Don’t worry; there’s a place that can turn your pup into a canine version of Emily Post—Neuman K-9 Academy in Hugo, MN (just a quick drive from the Twin Cities). With a brand-new location and their nationally renowned in-board Boot Camp program, these folks will have your dog showing off his “sit” and “stay” before you can say “biscuit.”

But the K-9 Academy is much more than a school for dogs. If you haven’t found your perfect pooch companion yet, you can purchase a trained dog or a puppy directly from the school—you can even specify the breed, age, gender and level of training you’re looking for, and a trainer will help you find a four-legged match. We talked with founder and training director Josiah Neuman about the secret to his school’s success.

Sidewalk Dog: How did the K9 Academy come about?

Josiah Neuman: In early 2007, I graduated from a dog training school and was certified as a Master Trainer. That summer, I founded Neuman K-9 Academy and launched our boot camp.

Boot camper Rosco working on a confidence-building exercise.

SD: Do you work under a guiding theory/style of training?

JN: Boot Camp is what we are most known for—the dogs learn proper etiquette for meeting and greeting people, and complete foundational obedience training, confidence-building, obstacle courses, physical conditioning and field trips—where they learn to put obedience training into action and demonstrate proper etiquette in public places. We use a balanced approach to training, with positive motivational techniques during the learning phases and a reward-based system as we graduate into the later stages. This results-oriented approach to training has been super-successful regardless of the age, breed or background of the dog.

SD: Tell us about your new location.

The school is located on 10 acres of land.

JN: In September 2011, we relocated our training academy and staff from St. Peter to Hugo, just 15 minutes from St. Paul and 25 minutes from Minneapolis. The facility is our home, so dogs in our training program are comfortable and in a friendly environment, similar to what they are used to back home. We have an indoor training studio, a physical conditioning room, a full kitchen, fenced play areas, and groomed walking trails.

SD: What makes your training school different than others in the area?

JN: The training experience is much more than sit, down, stay, heel and come. Boot campers learn how to put their learned exercises to use in real-life scenarios. We go into public places and teach them to work as a team, to meet and greet people or other dogs under control, to wait getting in or out of a vehicle, to sit at crosswalks and more. Beyond obedience, we incorporate physical conditioning with a treadmill, pack socialization, play time with other dogs, and obstacle courses for confidence-building and fun.

Zeus, a fully trained adult German Shepherd available from the Academy.

SD: How long do dogs spend at the Academy?

JN: General courses range from 4 to 12 weeks; however, we can create customized training packages that go above and beyond course curriculum. An example would be continued education specializing in service dog work, tracking, or sport K-9 training. In fact, our longest training program to date was 12 months.

SD: What kind of work do you do with puppies?

JN: Our puppy camp is available to the general public in a 4- or 8-week course, and all breeds are welcome. Puppies enrolled for training learn the necessities of being a great canine companion including crate training, household manners, how to avoid jumping, leash etiquette, confidence-building and foundational obedience. Puppies require a lot of time and training; this is a great program for owners who do not have the time or resources early on.

Wondering if your puppy will listen to you after he’s been expertly trained by the folks at Neuman K-9 Academy? Don’t worry—when he graduates, you’ll get a DVD demonstration of your dog performing the commands, printed material outlining the training (commands, hand signals and the like), hands-on instruction with your dog and two follow-up handler training sessions. Then you’re free to enjoy your perfectly mannered pup!

Treat Taste Test: Seven Stars Coffee House

Sadie the Wonderdoodle has lodged an official complaint with Sidewalk Dog. According to a memo she submitted to our inboxes Monday morning, it has been NINE WHOLE MONTHS (capitalization hers) since she’s been able to perform her only job at Sidewalk Dog: the Treat Taste Test. Last May, she sampled Doggy Fro Yo, a delectable summertime treat, and she was clamoring once again to grace us with her completely unbiased opinion of a new gourmet goodie.

So when we encountered a mug full of Puppy Packs at Seven Stars Coffee House in Edina, we decided to indulge her demands:

Size: Perfect for a mid-sized dog like Ms. Wonderdoodle. You wouldn’t use these as training treats, but they’re not so big as to spoil dinner. This Puppy Pack included capital-A-dorable shapes like snowmen, hearts and stars.

Texture: Toward the denser end of the crumbly spectrum.

I get to eat these at some point, right?

Test: Sadie waited patiently as we photographed the shapes for scale on the coffee table. After we gave the command, first went the heart. Then the snowman. Finally, the star. Luckily, she didn’t eat the Finnish dime from our coin collection, but if it were made out of the same ingredients as these magnificent morsels (ginger, honey, applesauce), we’re sure she would have tried. Then again, who knows what they make dimes out of in Finland … It should be noted that Doodle-Face consumed these beautiful biscuits whole, which can only mean one thing: They are too delicious for chewing. No time for chomping, gotta get these gingery gems straight to the belly, stat!

Verdict: Whimsical treats guaranteed to wag a Wonderdoodle’s tail (and other doggie tails, too).

Where to get them: Seven Stars Coffee House in Edina. Do yourself a favor and pick up a hand-rolled salt-and-pepper bagel while you’re there.

Coming Soon: AHS Whisker Whirl!

Psst—we’ve got the scoop on an off-the-hook party on Saturday, February 25th! There’ll be fancy-schmancy cocktails, delectable delights, a silent auction chock full of covetable items, and plenty of chances to rub shoulders with the Twin Cities’ creme de la creme—both two- and four-legged. When else can you bring your pooch to mix and mingle in such fabulous fundraising fashion?

We’re referring, of course, to Whisker Whirl, the annual good-time-for-a-great-cause-dog-friendly benefit for Animal Humane Society. The Sidewalk Dog pack is especially excited about this year’s shindig since we will be there in the flesh, serving up doggie h’ors d’oeuvre in the VIP room. And we’re not talking about dry, year-old biscuits, either. These savory morsels have been dreamed up and prepared by the gifted chefs at Minneapolis hot spot SEVEN, and they’re coming at ya’ in flavors like Begging Beef Bytes (a grilled tenderloin sensation) and Urban Hound Cakes (brown rice with chicken liver and yams).

Speaking of SEVEN and how awesome it is, did you know their Chef Colin Murray is the genius behind Barkley’s Bistro? It’s true. You can read all about it in our profile from last year.

Personally, our tails are already wagging in anticipation of hoping to meet the winners of the Cutest Dog Contest who, in addition to scoring tickets to Whisker Whirl, will also win:

  • A subscription to Mpls./St.Paul magazine
  • Three nights of pet boarding at Now Boarding
  • A SidewalkDog.com VIP pack, including our legendary “If I Pee on It, It’s Mine” t-shirt and two tickets to this summer’s Sushi with Your Poochie
  • A $100 gift card at Brazilian steakhouse Fogo de Chao
  • A free one-night stay at Duluth’s Canal Park Lodge

Outstanding, right? Indeed, there are so many reasons to celebrate with your decked-out doggie on February 25th. And remember, cat lovers are welcome, and bringing dogs is optional!

State of Purpose: A Puppy Mill Bill Update

In March of 2010, Animal Humane Society’s Tracie Popma wrote a guest post for our blog detailing the state’s puppy mill problem and a bill designed to license, inspect and regulate animal breeding facilities. At the time, the bill was struggling to make it through the Minnesota legislature, and unfortunately, it still hasn’t passed. It is being presented again this year, in hopes that it will pass and make a difference for Minnesota animals affected by breeders who currently are not following existing anti-cruelty laws.

Charlie, who was rescued with 49 other dogs from a puppy mill in Todd County. Photos by John Gregor of Coldsnap Photography.

During the 2012 Minnesota legislative session, which began this month, a dedicated coalition of pet lovers and pet-related organizations (see list at bottom) will once again advocate for the signing of S.F. 462/H.F. 702, known in layman’s terms as the dog and cat breeder regulation bill. At its core, the bill promotes responsibility and regulation.  “Minnesota has no state laws, rules, licensing or regulations to address the care of cats and dogs in commercial breeding facilities,” says Nancy Minion of Second Chance Animal Rescue, a key supporter of the Puppy and Kitten Mill Bill, as it’s often called. “That is why this bill is so important. It will provide basic licensing and regulation for this industry.”

For several years, Second Chance and the other groups and individuals in this coalition have been working to pass a regulation bill, but have come up against strong opposition from agri-business, some sportsmen groups, the National Rifle Association, breeder registries, and some breeders. Nancy explains, “Reputable breeders already comply with existing Minnesota anti-cruelty laws and understand the need for regulation; they expect that of all breeders,” Nancy says.

Go, Charlie, go!

So for the past year, the coalition did what it could to improve the probability that the bill would pass during this session. According to Nancy, the coalition held meetings with legislators, veterinarians, breeders both large and small, sportsman’s groups and many others. They garnered the support of more than 40 local shelters and rescues, as well as the Animal Law section of the MN State Bar Association. They got more than 180 (and counting!) area veterinarians and vet techs to sign letters in support of the bill. They got the signatures of more than 17,000 Minnesotans in 2010 and 2011 combined on petitions. And they’ve been raising awareness any way they can about the issues surrounding commercial dog and cat breeding.

Obviously, that’s a lot of work for one group of people. If you are interested in helping, here’s what you can do:

  • Visit Animal Folks MN’s website to sign a petition and sign up for email updates on the bill
  • Contact your state senator (S.F. 462) and state representative (H.F. 702) and tell them you would like their support of S.F. 462/ H.F. 702. If you don’t know who represents you, click here to find out.

Are you a dude? Do you have a dog? Can you write? If so, we want to hear from you.

The SidewalkDog.com pack is starting a new monthly blog series called “A Boy & His Dog.” Coming on the heels of the delectable “Chicks & Dogs” mini-series (http://www.sidewalkdog.com/blog/?s=chicks+and+dogs) of 2011, we are expecting to receive some pretty great tales here. The parameters for submission are simple: your story must be true, it must be engaging, it must be told in the first person and be about you and your dog, and it must not exceed 550 words. Bonus points for making readers laugh, but we are saps and welcome poignant pieces, too.

Stuck On You: Operation Distribute Decals is primed for success!

Two of this area’s greatest pleasures are shopping and dining out, and they’re only made better by the presence of your furry friend. In fact, Sidewalk Dog was founded on the premise that your dog should be an integral part of your everyday life, from walks and meals to errands and tasks. But we don’t want you waltzing into a store with your pooch, only to be told that dogs aren’t allowed. That’s why we started handing out decals with our logo, which act as a beacon of dog-friendliness in shop windows and restaurant patios across the land. Cute, no?

We’ve been handing out these bad boys for more than a year now, and every time we pass a shop or restaurant proudly proclaiming its dog-friendliness with our logo, our hearts sing a little song. You’ll see them at some of our favorite local businesses, like Paperista, b. Resale and South Lyndale Liquors.

And in our effort to make the Twin Cities as dog-friendly as doggedly possible, we want to get these super stickies plastered on the window of every flower shop, restaurant patio, hardware store and vintage boutique that welcomes four-footed customers. With that in mind, we’re announcing the launch of Operation Distribute Decals, in which we attempt to wallpaper our fair cities with these window-adorning wonders.

A decal welcomes dogs to Moss Envy in Minneapolis.

How does it work? Well, if you own a business that could use one of our decals, click here to fill out a request form. Uniquely informative Sidewalk Dog decals are snazzy-looking, they’re totally free, and we’ll mail or deliver one to you post-haste. Once the decal is displayed, take a picture and tell us about it! We want to see these babies all over Facebook and Twitter. Even if you’re not the business’ owner, go ahead and share your decal sightings with us, along with your eloquent explanations of why you love the spot where you spotted them. Think of it as a real-life Where’s Waldo.

Just imagine the implications: If this project is a success, no Twin Citian will ever again have to approach a shop with trepidation when Toto’s in tow. No longer will a business owner sigh as a pooch-walking potential customer passes by, unsure of his store’s pet policy. No more fluffy friends will have to watch their people wining and patio dining from the confines of a car, noses pressed against the glass in hopes of a biscuit.

Together, we can make this world a reality. Together, we can create Dogtopia.
